Some General Motors (GM) cars were equipped with a theft prevention system called VATS or Vehicle Anti-Theft System. This started in 1986 in the Corvette and continued in other models starting in 1988 and was completely phased out in 2004. GM started using the transponder system in 1997 in Cadillac and has since phased it in all other GM brands (Buick, Chevrolet, Pontiac, and Oldsmobile).
